Joey scuppers all hopes as Scoop6 rolls at Thurles

There is set to be over £121,000 rolling over into next week’s Tote Scoop6, as Thurles’ card on Saturday failed to yield a single winner.

With 10 units covering eight of the 16 runners in leg five, the Duggan Veterinary Handicap Chase, hopes were high for a final leg challenge. However as the outsider Well Joey stormed to victory, the £121,202.69 pool went begging. Scoop6 SuperClub decided not too play as the card looked too tricky and the rollover is not yet at th right level for us.

Lorna Fowler’s Politesse got the card started in style, with the six-year-old’s victory marking her out as a mare to follow in the months to come. Her victory took 30% of the original pool through to leg two, where Jetz got his head in front for Jessica Harrington.

An already depleted 4,810 units were still in with a chance ahead of leg three, before Adrian Murray’s My Newbrook Rose put paid to most of their hopes of landing the prize.

Just 31 units were carried into the feature race, where Zero Ten shot clear in an incident-packed Pierce Molony Memorial Novice Chase. Although he was the second-most popular horse in the Grade 3 contest, his win meant just 10 units made it through to the penultimate leg.

But as Well Joey belied his lofty odds in the subsequent handicap chase, all hope was lost for Scoop6 players.

Tote spokesman Ben Stones said: “While no winners were crowned on Saturday, it does mean that next week’s meeting at the Curragh could play host to a healthy Tote Scoop6 fund as the Irish flat season kicks into gear.”

At a time when racing fans are short on equine action to enjoy, the Scoop6 could yet deliver a shot in the arm for any lucky winners in seven day’s time.
